Canary Wharf is a key financial district and the home of many international businesses, including Barclays, Credit Suisse, HSBC, Morgan Stanley and J. P. Morgan. Built in 1936 for Fruit Lines Ltd, who imported fruit from the Mediterranean and Canaries, the company requested that their berth be changed from No 32 West Wood Quay and renamed Canary Wharf. Together with the commercial skyscrapers, Canary Wharf is also bristling with a wealth of new luxury residential developments, including Lincoln Plaza, Pan Peninsula and Providence Tower. One Canada Square originally held the record for being the tallest UK building, at 770 feet, until The Shard was completed, which stands at a jaw-dropping 1,016 feet. Since it is primarily a commercial hub, the weekday population look much more business-like than the weekend visitors, who are drawn to the hundreds of cafes, restaurants and the three huge retail centres.

Discover more about the history of the area at The Museum of London Docklands, which houses a large collection of pictures displayed in 12 galleries, together with numerous historical artefacts. The museum hosts a number of talks and events, as well as interactive educational sessions for children. Billingsgate Market is also nearby and is the place to find the delicacies of the sea, as it is the largest inland fish market in the UK. Within its 120 shops you can find anything and everything; from jewellery at Tiffany & Co to your weekly shop at Marks & Spencer Simply Food, or even a wedding dress at Les Trois Soeurs.
The Jubilee Line serves Canary Wharf (Zone 2), from where you can get to London Bridge in approx. 6 minutes, and Bond Street in around 12 minutes. You can also access the DLR (Zone 2) from Canary Wharf, or take the following bus routes: D3, D7, D8, 135, 277 and N550. The Thames Clipper River Bus can take you from Waterloo to Canary Wharf in around 30 minutes and Woolwich to Canary Wharf in about 23 minutes.
